Ugly scenes unfolded on the streets of New York as England fans were caught up in a furious punch-up following their nation's devastating 2-1 World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina.
The Three Lions' dream of reaching a first World Cup final since 1966 was shattered in Atlanta, and some supporters clearly could not contain their frustration, lashing out at others in the Big Apple in unsavoury post-match scuffles.
England had appeared to be on course for glory when Morgan Rogers delivered a pinpoint cross in the 55th minute for Anthony Gordon, the Barcelona forward, to fire past Emiliano Martinez and give Thomas Tuchel's side the lead.
However, Tuchel opted for defensive substitutions and a shift to a back five โ a decision that invited relentless Argentine pressure. Nico Gonzalez tested Jordan Pickford, and Alexis Mac Allister rattled the woodwork either side of the second-half hydration break.
With just five minutes of normal time remaining, Enzo Fernandez beat Pickford from 25 yards to draw Argentina level. Lautaro Martinez then sealed England's fate, heading home an inch-perfect Lionel Messi cross to send the South American champions into the final.
Tuchel held his hands up in the aftermath, accepting full responsibility for the manner of the collapse. "I did defensive substitutions in the last games to help the players," the England boss explained. "But we conceded straight away and decided to go to a back five because the gaps were far too open, they kept crossing."
He added: "Straight after our goal we conceded too many chances. We tried to help, but of course, the responsibility is on the coach, but if it doesn't go well, it's easy to say I was wrong. I have to make a decision on the pitch. I take the responsibility."
Argentina will now face Spain in Sunday's World Cup final at the MetLife Stadium in New York, after La Roja dispatched France 2-0 in their semi-final on Tuesday. England, meanwhile, will meet France in Miami on Saturday in the third-place match as both European sides compete for the bronze medal.
