Fleetwood Town etched their name into football folklore on Tuesday night by eliminating reigning Premier League champions Arsenal from the Carabao Cup in a dramatic penalty shootout. Entering the contest 83 league places below the top-flight leaders, the League Two side defied the odds at a windy Highbury to advance to the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup for the very first time in their history. Supporters spilled onto the pitch in celebration after Conor Haughey buried the decisive spot-kick to seal one of the tournament's greatest upsets.
The Lancashire hosts had shocked the visitors early on when Aaron Loupalo-Bi fired them ahead in the 21st minute. Arsenal struck back after the break through Viktor Gyokeres to level the scores, but the Gunners were reduced to ten men when Max Dowman was dismissed for kicking out after a robust tackle by Harrison Neal. Fleetwood held firm to force penalties, where goalkeeper Jay Lynch made crucial saves from Ben White, Martin Odegaard, and Bruno Guimaraes. Lynch, who lost his voice organising the backline, revealed that the squad took inspiration from Grimsby Town's giant-killing victory over Manchester United in the competition last season.
Manager Matt Lawlor, who took permanent charge in March following two prior caretaker stints, labelled the triumph as the biggest night in the club's history. Left-back Jake Batty praised his team's resolute cup mindset amid a difficult league campaign where Fleetwood occupy 18th place. Batty stated that the squad should remain completely fearless moving forward, hoping for another home fixture in the quarter-finals while calling on the local supporters to replicate the electric atmosphere in regular league competition.
The historic result marks a dramatic turnaround for the Cod Army, who were relegated from League One in April 2024 and entered the tie on the back of conceding six goals across away defeats to Cheltenham and Exeter. Having won only one of their previous eight league outings, Fleetwood must quickly shift focus back to domestic survival as they prepare to host Bristol Rovers on Saturday.
